Chapter Eight

Tara came back to the main house the next morning after spending a long night awake and worrying about Parker. She had run the entire island, checking lookouts and waiting for a summons from Morgan saying Parker needed or wanted to see her. When that never came, she continued to do what she did best—she worked.

She entered the main house and headed to the kitchen where Morgan and Leila were eating breakfast. Shana was with them and they all smiled at her in greeting. Tara tried to smile in return but failed as she walked over to fill a cup with coffee. Then she turned toward the table and quirked a brow at Morgan.

"She's still upstairs," was the only answer she got from Morgan.

Tara filled a carafe with coffee, grabbed another cup, and headed upstairs. She knocked on the outer door and got no answer so she opened it. She didn't see or hear Parker anywhere. She set everything down on the coffee table and then went to the closed bedroom door. She reached out to turn the knob and found it locked. She sighed. This was going to be a difficult morning.

Parker woke to someone jiggling the doorknob to her bedroom. She felt like she had just fallen asleep. She looked at the bedside clock and saw that she actually had only slept about an hour and a half. She had sat up most of the night on her balcony and thought about everything that had happened in her life as of late.

She lay there for a minute longer and knew it was Tara. Everything from the night before came rushing back. What was she going to do? Tara had told her she was her match. That they were fated to be together forever. She knew she cared about Tara, but she had too much on her shoulders right then to label it as love. She couldn't put any more people in danger than she already had. She sighed out loud and knew she had to get up. If Tara was anything like her, her patience would only last so long.

She got up slowly and pulled on her short silk robe as she headed to the bedroom door. She took a deep breath, unlocked the door, and opened it. Tara was pacing in the living area. When she saw Parker, she stopped in her tracks and waited. Parker was always confident in herself but at this moment, she faltered. She didn't know what to say to this woman standing before her. Tara already meant more to her in one day than anyone had in years. She was lost on how to begin the conversation.

Tara must have seen the confusion on Parker's face because she gestured to the carafe on the table and said, "I brought you coffee. Thought you could use a pick-me-up." She slowly sat down on the couch and tried to smile at Parker.

"Thank you. I really need this," Parker said as she filled a cup. Tara took note that Parker liked her coffee black.
